I was literally born into the lab industry. My father was an entrepreneur and successful lab owner. I loved it. My mother also worked in the lab, so my brothers and I spent
the majority of our after school days there. I grew up in the lab and really felt a connection there. In 1981 he started a small innovative products company called Protect-OBubble.
As a 7 year old, I’d go to the office and just ‘play’ work. It was fun for me. Now, I’m enjoying the fact that my kids do the same thing. While my friends went to the park, my favourite thing to do was to go to work with Dad.
I was born and raised in Malta. In 1982 I met my wife, who was attending a language course there. We married 6 years later in Germany. I had been preparing to study Biology, but changed my plans due to the employment possibilities. I learnt German, studied economics and ended up working in the family business, something that was never planned...
I was at the beach, summer of 1972, and I didn’t know exactly what I was going to do, while employed at a big hotel in Boston, valet-parking cars as a summer job. One
day, at the beach, I was talking with a friend of the family. She, Charlotte, was an artist and her husband, Sam, a dentist. At the time, I had been very involved in
art as a hobby and Charlotte was familiar with my work.
In a very casual discussion, she brought up dental technology as a possible field that may interest me.
Working in an industry that’s going through the most monumental change in
more than a hundred years is currently taxing lab owners, technicians,
distributors and manufacturers. For decades, running a lab (or any of the
other related businesses) was primarily about day to day operations, keeping customers
happy, following up on leads and looking at a new material every year or two.
